Pre-Action Control Valve Inspection Checklist

A fire accident is one of the most destructive events that can happen. Thus, a fire protection system is a basic requirement to protect people and properties.

Fire sprinklers are triggered when smoke or fire is detected. Unfortunately, fire sprinkler systems may cause collateral water damage. For example, when a fire breaks out in only one section of a library, fire sprinklers may disperse water all throughout the library, causing water damage to books and furniture.

A solution to this problem is the installation of pre-action control valves. These valves control the direction of water within the pipelines and discharge water wherever it is necessary.

Types of Pre-Action Systems

Double interlock pre-action – This system requires two separate events in order to fully function, a triggering of a detection device and activation of an automatic sprinkler system. This system provides excellent defense against unnecessary discharge and water damage.

Single interlock pre-action – The single interlock system is designed not to wait for the automatic sprinklers to operate to open the main valve, as a double interlock system would. The detection for this system has a lower temperature rating and, once triggered, will immediately fill the pipelines with water. Single interlock preaction systems are usually employed in locations where there is less sensitivity to water damage than might be where a double interlock system would be used and a quicker fire response is desired 

Non-interlock pre-action – In a non-interlock system, if a sprinkler valve is accidentally broken, unlike the single or double interlock systems, the non-interlock will open the valve and allow water into the system piping, releasing water into the protected area. As such, non-interlock pre-action systems have limited protection against false alarms.
